Blondes, meet your new BFF!
Hey blondie! Are you ever left feeling like the sun made your hair super yellow? Maybe only a few washes after your blonding session with your stylist go by and your blonde feels dull. If you found yourself nodding yes to either of those scenarios, this blog post is for you! You've likely heard of purple shampoo but maybe you don't know what exactly it is. Maybe you even have some purple shampoo in your vault of products, but you have no clue how to use it. Look no further, we've got all your purple shampoo questions answered here!
What's the best purple shampoo to use?
Around here, we love all things Amika. They have an absolutely killer line, Bust Your Brass, dedicated just to blonde babes. The line includes a shampoo, conditioner, and foam treatment. We love it because it gets rid of unwanted yellow tones + leaves your hair feeling oh so soft ( read: not all purple shampoos were created the same and some can be extremely drying. )
What is purple shampoo?
Purple shampoo is just what it sounds like, shampoo that is purple! It's designed to distribute it's purple pigment to neutralize yellow tones to bring back the bright blonde you left the salon with.
Who should use purple shampoo?
If you are a natural blonde or a salon created blonde, purple shampoo is for you! This will allow your color to last longer between your sessions and keep away unwanted tones. It's used best as a preventive product, but it should be noted it's not for everyday use! We suggest starting out by using it one time a week and build up to more days only if needed. If you ever notice a purple tone to your hair after using your purple shampoo, step away from the product sister! The purple tone should fade within another wash or two, but if it doesn't have your stylist give you a clarifying treatment.
Why is my hair turning yellow to begin with?
If you are a salon created blonde, you've likely heard your stylist toss around the term gloss, glaze, or toner. It's the second step in your blonding session and often times done at the shampoo bowl. Anytime your hair is lightened, it exposes a naturally underlying yellow pigment that ALL hair colors and types posses. The gloss acts as a way to control the yellow pigment as well as achieve the desired tone (aka cool or warm). A gloss is only designed to last about 4 weeks, which means if you are going longer than that between salon visits, the yellow tone will begin to reappear. This is where the purple shampoo comes into play, acting as a buffer to both prevent yellow and maintain your cool blonde.
Another cause for yellowing hair is your environment. Pollution, swimming, and smoking can all contribute to If you plan to be out in the sun this season, we suggest wearing a hat and protecting your locks with The Shield as a preventative measure. If you've got hard water ( an easy way to tell is if you find white water spots on the products you keep in the shower ), we suggest investing in a water filtering shower head. It's also really important to make sure you've got your heat tools at the correct temperature settings for your hair type (check that out here) as well as using professional products.
Last but not least, oils from the scalp, medication, diet and health conditions can contribute to yellow tinge in white or blonde hair. If you have any concern about your health or diet and how it can be affecting your hair, be sure to reach out to a doctor.
Before we sign off, it's only right we tell you about our Product of the Moment: Bust Your Brass Violet Foam. (it happens to pair PERFECTLY with the Bust Your Brass Shampoo). This violet foam acts as a leave in treatment meant to replace your conditioner. When using, you'll shampoo like normal (We suggest using this foam on the wash days you aren't using your purple shampoo.) towel dry your hair, apply 1-2 pumps from scalp to ends to your damp hair, and then continue with your normal style routine. It's super simple and super effective in getting a leg up on the brass!
