Are you an avid daily shampoo-er? Has your bestie ever mentioned she can go a full week in between washes? Maybe your stylist has told you need to "train" your hair for longer shampoo stretches. First things first: We know the thought of not shampooing everyday might seem scary and even a little gross. We have all been there. Your bestie who goes a week between washes? It didn't happen for her overnight. Training your hair to rely less on shampoo is like training your body to run a marathon, each day you will be able to push your hair juuuuust a littttllle further.
Right now you might be thinking " Why would I even want to go longer in between washes? I have a great relationship with my shampoo!" The reasons for this are plentiful:
1.) Frequent Shampooing Dries Out Your Scalp: Between the hot water and the constant use of product directly on your scalp, the result is a dry/itchy/flaky scalp. Yuck.
2.) It strips your hair of it's natural oils: Every time we shampoo, we are remove the oils our hair creates naturally. So if you're over doing it with your shampoos, your hair is going to go into OVERDRIVE and start overcompensating by creating more oil, more quickly.
3.) It causes your color to fade quicker, and you run through shampoo faster too! Both of these problems end up costing you more money in the long run. No thanks.
Ok.. so now that we have determined you are in a toxic cycle with your shampoo, how can we get you out? Never fear, you'll be up to weekly washes just like your BFF in no time if you follow these steps.
Remember when we said it was like training for a marathon? For this marathon prep, you are going to push your washes further each day. So if you currently shampoo every day, start on a weekend and go 1.5 days. Once your hair has mastered that, go to every 2 days, and so on.

1.) Apply at night. This allows the product to work as a preventive product and absorb the oils as they come in during your night's rest.
2.) Apply only at your roots. This prevents yucky build up on your ends.
3.) Apply only when you think you'll need it. If you are just starting your journey, it's likely ok to go ahead and apply nightly, but as your begin to go further in between shampoos, try to go further with your dry shampoo use. This is going to prevent feeling like you've got a ton of product in your hair, which is only going to make you want to shampoo even more!!
